Planning for the future

The first phase of the Shipyard redevelopment project is well underway and planning for subsequent phases began in early 2007.  Phase I community benefits include unprecedented features.  Two of particular interest here are: a Legacy Fund, derived from project proceeds and dedicated to addressing community needs, including youth, culture and the arts: and at least 6 acres of improved property to be devoted to community-serving uses.  Assuming similar benefits in future phases of development, there are numerous long-range opportunities for arts programs and facilities at the shipyard to serve the community.

When the next parcel, Parcel B, is turned over to the City, the planning for cultural facilities will intensify.  By starting to plan collaborative uses now, the artists and community groups with an interest in cultural facilities will be able to frame their objectives and participate more coherently in the larger planning process which takes shape.

Towards this end, we will implement several planning activities and sustainable programs as part of this project.
