2012-2013 Artist in Residence Kristine Mays

A joint project of STAR and The Point (landlord to a majority of shipyard artists), this program grants studio space for 18 months to artists living or involved with the Bayview-Hunters Point community.

Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR) is pleased to announce that Kristine Mays was chosen as the 2012-2013 Artist in Residence at the Shipyard.

Kristine Mays has developed a way of expressing the human form through wire by simple experimentation, curiosity, and a passion to create. Her work with wire began with the idea of transforming a straight line into something of volume.

Formed from hundreds of pieces of wire, her sculptures become something familiar both physically and emotionally as the human form emerges. “I went from creating emotionally charged drawings, to sculpting with the thought of capturing “souls”. In creating garments out of wire Kristine Mays has managed to create the essence of the person wearing the garment as the invisible occupant is revealed among the folds and shapes that give life to the sculpture. The viewer is given the option of focusing on the physical or seeing the “soul” that has been captured.”

Kristine Mays has exhibited her work in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California over the past 17 years. She has raised thousands of dollars for AIDS research through the sale of her work, benefiting local and global efforts. Collectors of her work include an eclectic mix of people, with her work hanging in many Bay Area homes and many private collections throughout the United States.

Born in San Francisco, Ms. Mays attended Lowell High School before going to DePaul University in Chicago where she earned in BA in Arts Administration.
